CCA students’ artwork shown at DAYs exhibition at chi K11 art space

The Department of Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA) held the exhibition titled "DAYs" at the chi K11 art space at K11 Art Mall between 14 and 30 May. This was the second exhibition curated by CCA at the same venue. "DAYs" followed a previous exhibition titled "The Glassroom", held two years ago, and used paper as the medium of artistic creation this time around.

Showcasing the creativity of our students, the 17-day exhibition was divided into three sections—"Daily Use of Paper", "Paper and Life" and "Happy Life"—to explore the relationship between paper and people’s daily lives. The exhibition included 17 art pieces created by 49 students from CCA; these included paintings, sculptures and installations, and used techniques such as carving, engraving, pasting, and shaping.

Dr Tam Cheung-on, Head of CCA, said: "I am delighted to see students from CCA curate their second exhibition at the chi K11 art space. The ‘DAYs’ exhibition is a practice-based learning project that allows students to showcase their talents and thoughts by investigating and executing the entire curation process. Because of the pandemic, students have been unable to attend normal classroom lessons. Fortunately, the ‘DAYs’ exhibition filled the gaps by providing our students with experiential and practical learning activities outside the classroom. During such uncertain times, it is heartening to see our students overcome difficulties and show their willingness to make the most of every learning opportunity to express their thoughts through art. "

In his opening remark at the exhibition, Professor Laurence James Wood, Associate Head of CCA, said: "I am very pleased to once again congratulate the students and Dr Sunnie He, my colleague from CCA and the principal curator of the exhibition, for achieving this second exhibition at the chi K11 art space, and for producing the associated publication ‘DAYs’. As in 2020, to complete such a project during a pandemic has been a particular challenge and the students have excelled in all areas. The project celebrates our ability to meet challenges and it highlights the importance of continuing to explore and experiment with the materials around us that are too easily taken for granted."

Dr He Yang, lecturer and Director of Lab C of CCA, said: "On behalf of ‘DAYs’, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all parties who contributed to the success of this project. In 2019, our students had their first exhibition ‘The Glassroom’ at chi K11 Art Space, which featured glass as the medium of creation. This year, we explored the myriad possibilities of using paper for artistic creation and received 45 artwork proposals from 63 students, 17 of which were finally selected for the exhibition. It is very encouraging to see that students remain enthusiastic to learn and express themselves through art despite the pandemic."

Around 5,000 visitors attended the 17-day exhibition. They were greatly touched and inspired by the artistic ability and creativity of our students as well as their art pieces.
