FLASS students shine in their academic as well as extracurricular endeavours. Tracy Liu Sin-ying, a year four student in the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Geography) programme from the Department of Social Sciences (SSC), won the "Prix Meilleur Espoir" (Best Hope Prize) at The 11th Interuniversity French Speech Competition of the Pearl River Delta jointly organised by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao, and the Institute French of China.

Tracy believes that learning a new language means learning a new culture because it enables her to communicate with people of that language. The language enthusiast particularly likes French because of the unpredictability of the language. She said, "French always has grammatical exceptions. I never get bored when learning French. It's also a pleasure to learn about the French culture when learning the language."

The judges from France and Hong Kong congratulated Liu on her "brilliant performance" and highlighted that her "well-organised and solid presentation" enabled them to better understand the social effects of the sanitary crisis. Her involvement in helping students with special needs and their families during the crisis made a strong impression on the adjudicators.

Tracy plans to enrol in a geography-related master's degree programme in a French-speaking country after completing her undergraduate studies at the University. "In a foreign country, I can explore geography from different perspectives," she said.
