Message from the Dean

Welcome to the inaugural issue of FLASS FORWARD, the new quarterly newsletter of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences that aims to bring this community together.

We have named this publication FLASS FORWARD because FLASS is a diverse group of forward thinkers. We at FLASS always think about how to improve tomorrow's world and society. FLASS has six departments and five research / resources centres that cover a wide array of academic disciplines. Our colleagues at FLASS, who are experts in a variety of fields, have been working tirelessly throughout the years to nurture the next generation, conduct impactful research and respond to the needs of society.

Over the years, our scholars have made significant progress in pushing the frontiers of knowledge, and converting novel ideas into practical and useful applications. We equip our students with this knowledge, as well as with critical thinking and problem-solving skills to prepare them for future endeavours. With both the hard and soft skills they learn at FLASS and at EdUHK, our graduates have gone on to contribute to the teaching profession and to other sectors as well.

In this newsletter, we will share with you stories about our successes in nurturing talent, and our accomplishments in research and knowledge transfer. It also features fascinating stories about how our colleagues are using their research to benefit the community and will keep you abreast of the latest developments at FLASS.

I hope FLASS FORWARD will help you learn more about FLASS’s vibrant community, which is made up of a big family of educators, researchers, students and alumni. To help members of the FLASS family develop a greater sense of community, we will create a section called Community Voices in future issues, where readers can share their thoughts with other members of the community. If you have anything to share—whether it is a book or film review, a photo or even a poem—you are most welcome to share it with us. You can send what you would like to share to the executive editor of the newsletter: Mr Tam Siu-man at tamsm@eduhk.hk.

Enjoy reading FLASS FORWARD and do stay connected with us!
