President Professor John Lee meets elite athletes at graduation ceremony
A total of 20 elite athletes completed their studies at EdUHK this year. They were enrolled in Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) (BHE) or the Master of Social Sciences in Sports Coaching and Management (MSocSc(SCM)) programmes offered by FLASS. During the graduation ceremony held on 9 December 2023, President Professor John Lee Chi-kin, accompanied by Dean of FLASS Professor Li Wai-keung and other academic staff from FLASS, met and congratulated some of these elite athletes.
This year, a total of 20 elite athletes graduated from EdUHK. These included Hong Kong’s legendary cyclist and a former member of Hong Kong’s cycling team Wong Kam-po. In recent years, Ah Po, the name people usually call him, has been avidly promoting the sport of cycling in primary and secondary schools. After completing the BHE programme in 2020 at EdUHK, the star cyclist continued to study for a PGDE (Primary) at the University to learn teaching methods related to sports. During his PGDE study, Ah Po worked as a “trainee teacher” in a primary school and gained practical teaching experience, which he believes will help him continue to contribute to the development of cycling in the city.
Chen Suijin is an elite athlete graduating from the MSocSc(SCM) programme this year. Suijin has won a bronze medal in the women's Taijiquan & Taijijian all-round at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023. Elite athletes including Ricky Hui Wai-hei (javelin), Chau Yee-ping (rowing), Chow Hin-long (badminton), Leung Wing-wun (rowing) and Kwok Ka-wai (canoeing) who completed in the Asian Games have also graduated this year.
The EdUHK has appointed badminton player Yuen Sin-ying as this year’s Elite Athlete-Friendly University ambassador, hoping that her ambassadorship will help promote the holistic development of local athletes. A graduate of the class of 2021 of the BHE programme, Sin-yin has continued her studies at this University and completed the MSocSc(SCM) programme with distinction this year.
Sin-ying has won numerous major international awards in badminton including representing the University in winning the gold medal in the “First Asian University Badminton Championships”. Completing her MSocSc(SCM) studies with distinction, Sin-ying demonstrated that an athlete can also achieve excellent academic performance. She set herself as a role model for what elite athletes can accomplish in their dual career development pathway.
“The master’s programme has strengthened my knowledge about sports. I learnt theories about sports team management and event management. I also took courses about how to become a coach. This knowledge can certainly help me advance my career in coaching and other sport-related fields when one day I cease to be an athlete,” said Sin-ying.
