Five new programmes designed to meet social demands

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Science and Coaching
Department of Health and Physical Education

Due to recent changes in society, people are not only focused on maintaining their health, but also on enhancing their sports performance. To respond to this societal need, the programme aims to train competent sports science and coaching professionals who can provide professional, helpful and practical guidance and advice.

The programme is innovatively designed to integrate knowledge from various subjects including sports science, coaching, physiology, psychology, marketing, nutrition, technology, life education and more, training graduates to be well-rounded professional coaches. The programme will also provide students with internship opportunities at renowned sports organisations in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area and overseas. This superb opportunity will allow students to dialogue and interact with sports leaders, build connections, enrich subject knowledge and generic skills, identify career paths, and lay a solid foundation for future career development. A professional teaching team with leading roles in various academic fields will teach students the most advanced and essential knowledge and skills in related areas. This will keep students ahead of their peers and help them to seize opportunities as they strive for success and excellence in their academic field(s) and workplace.

The programme’s comprehensive and in-depth training will prepare students to take up a variety of jobs—including rehabilitation advisor, injury prevention consultant, personal trainer, sports event planner, and so on—in sports industries within commercial and public sectors.

Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Social Entrepreneurship and Development Studies
Department of Asian and Policy Studies

Social entrepreneurship forms a crucial component in our modern social economy. Very often, social entrepreneurs are the ones who offer innovative ideas to help solve increasingly complex social problems that defy easy solutions.

The programme aims to equip students with the necessary academic and professional skills to become a professional in social enterprises, corporations and government/non-government organisations in local, national as well as international settings. It will enhance students’ understanding of the dynamics of social transitions within a region (such as the Greater Bay Area) and grant students a comprehensive knowledge of regional developments from a comparative perspective. Students will also be taught how to build support among stakeholders.

Upon completion of the programme, students will be equipped with practical organisational and entrepreneurial skills that are necessary for their future careers. They will also receive rigorous training in development studies, and will benefit from the network they develop through the programme’s internship opportunities and field trips.

Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Sociology and Community Studies
Department of Social Sciences

The programme is devised to address our society’s growing need for professionals who have solid training in quantitative and qualitative research methods, and can apply sociological concepts and theories to approaching community issues.

Sociology-based, community-driven and experiential learning are the three pillars of the programme. The sociology-based approach allows students to acquire essential sociological concepts and theories for analysing the development of Hong Kong and the region. The community-driven dimension of the programme equips students with the ability to develop practical and sustainable plans for promoting the betterment of communities at local and regional levels. The experiential learning design of the programme enables students to apply their knowledge and skills through internship opportunities and community participation projects.

Upon graduation, students can advance their careers in the fields of community development, public relations, social and marketing research, youth development and academic institutions.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Artificial Intelligence and Educational Technology
Department of Mathematics and Information Technology

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), smart technology, robotics and automation are some of the key forces that are transforming the world and propelling the fourth industrial revolution. In response to this, education needs to be further reformed so that it can produce more qualified professionals in AI and educational technology to support the future development of schools, tertiary education, governments and corporate sectors. The new programme is designed to meet the societal needs for such talents.

The programme not only provides students with a fundamental knowledge and set of skills in AI and educational technology, but also develops their ability to apply such knowledge and skills to teaching and learning. Students are also expected to acquire skills in using appropriate methods of AI and educational technology to solve real-world problems in educational contexts, and gain the capacity to conduct and evaluate educational projects in accordance with the ethical use of AI and educational technology. Through the programme, students will also be able to tap into internship and experiential learning opportunities.

This programme prepares students to take up technical and support positions. Graduates are equipped with solid knowledge for promotion to senior positions, such as system analyst or educational technology professional.

The programme is specially designed to enable students to have an in-depth integrated understanding of sustainability issues. It is also tailored to enable students to consider and tackle different environmental problems systematically using an evidence-based approach, and will teach them how to communicate their views and arguments on environmental issues to convince different stakeholders.
