Together, we make the world a better place to live

Welcome to the winter issue of FLASS FORWARD. We are very excited to be able to share with you a host of fantastic updates about our faculty members, students and alumni.

With our core strength in education-related subjects, EdUHK is primarily known for excelling in training outstanding educators who truly care for students and society. However, our ambition is more than that. Guided by our “Education-plus” philosophy, we are expanding our reach into areas that complement our conventional strength in education. We are pleased to announce that FLASS will be launching five multidisciplinary programmes in the 2022/23 academic year to kick off our foray into new fields. Our feature story for this issue will provide more details about these new programmes, and how they enrich our current curriculum.

Our scholars have been working diligently on their research and knowledge transfer projects and accomplishing a great deal. A dozen FLASS scholars have been named in Stanford University’s latest list of the world’s top 2% most highly cited scientists, a testament to the high quality of their research work. Several FLASS scholars won gold medals at the Sixth International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN) held in August 2021, recognising their efforts to translate their research into real-life applications. You can read about their incredible achievements and how they contribute to communities in this newsletter.

The winter season also marks a time of joy for our graduates. This year, graduation ceremonies were conducted on a faculty basis. We celebrated with our graduates through four in-person ceremony sessions and a pre-recorded video. I am always thrilled to see graduates step out from our campus, bright and ready to contribute to society. FLASS believes in the transformative power of education. It is my hope that our mentoring and teaching over the years have left a lasting impact on our graduates. May the knowledge, skills and warm memories they accumulated here accompany them on their journey ahead.

As 2021 is approaching its end, I would like to take this opportunity to send my heartfelt thanks to everyone at FLASS who has been working assiduously throughout the year in their administrative and management tasks, teaching and mentoring work, research and knowledge transfer undertakings, and community-related projects. Together, we are bringing our faculty forward, transforming people in deep and meaningful ways, and making the world a better place to live.
