HPE delegation exchanges ideas with higher institutions in Beijing and Tianjin, and witnesses MOU signing ceremony with Tianjin University of Sport
In an effort to expand the scope of academic collaborations with higher education institutions in mainland China and to enrich the staff's understanding of sports development in the nation, the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) organised an academic trip to Beijing and Tianjin between 11 and 14 March 2024. In Tianjin, HPE delegation witnessed the signing of the cooperation agreement between EdUHK and Tianjin University of Sport.
Led by Acting Head of Department Dr Andy Tse Choi-yeung, the HPE delegation first arrived in Beijing to meet with the teaching and research staff from China University of Geosciences (Beijing) and Beijing Sport University to discuss potential collaborations in joint research projects, student exchange programmes, and so forth. It also visited the sports training centres of Beijing Sport University and Tianjin University of Sport. Members of the delegation consisted of Dr Bob Sun Fenghua and Dr Gary Chow Chi-ching, both Associate Heads of Department, and other academic and teaching staff from HPE.
In Tianjin, Dr Andy Tse and other faculty members from HPE witnessed the Signing Ceremony of the Renewal of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between EdUHK and Tianjin University of Sport on 14 March. EdUHK’s President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin and Professor Zhang Xin, President of the Tianjin University of Sport, represented their respective universities to sign the renewed MoU. The two universities signed their first cooperation agreement in April 2019.
The renewed MOU will strengthen academic exchanges and research collaborations between the two signing parties, as well as support the dual career pathways of national-level athletes. In the signing ceremony, Professor Lee awarded Mr Hao Dawei a full scholarship to support his Doctor of Education studies at EdUHK and Ms Xin Yani a full scholarship to support her to study for the Master of Social Sciences in Sports Coaching and Management programme at HPE of EdUHK.
Mr Hao was the 2002 National Wushu Routine Champion, Ms Xin was the bronze medallist of the China soft tennis team at the 2013 East Asian Games and the 2014 Asian Games. Meanwhile, with the support of the Tianjin Municipal Sports Bureau, EdUHK announced the appointment of Ms Yao Di, a former member of the women’s national volleyball team, as the EdUHK National Athlete Ambassador, with a role to promote and participate in sports activities going forward.
At the ceremony, EdUHK’s President Professor Lee said that EdUHK, as an “elite athlete-friendly university”, strives to encourage elite athletes to pursue further studies by awarding scholarships and forming collaborations with different institutions. “The dual-career pathway arrangement allows elite athletes to improve their academic standards and professional capabilities simultaneously. This not only sets an example for other athletes and young people, but also creates a positive impact on society and the nation,” said Professor Lee.
Professor Zhang Xin thanked EdUHK for providing scholarships to support mainland China’s elite athletes to pursue doctoral and master's programmes. He hoped that the two universities can further deepen cooperation in teaching, scientific research, and exchange of personnel. “We look forward to more resource sharing that allows both parties to complement each other’s strength in joint teaching and research, talent training, and so on,” said Professor Zhang. He also believes that the renewed MoU will create a new model of cooperation between the two parties, which is conducive to unleashing new productivity.
The signing ceremony was held at the Tianjin University of Sport. It was attended by Mr Jin Zhifang, Director of the Tianjin CPPCC’s Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan’s Overseas Chinese Affairs and Foreign Affairs Committee, and Mr Wei Zhuo and Mr Liu Peng, Deputy Director and bureau head of the committee.
