To honour the remarkable professional achievements and significant contributions of our graduates to the community and their alma mater, we launched the Outstanding FLASS Alumni Award in the 2023/24 academic year. Graduates who completed their studies at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (FLASS) or the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) are eligible for nomination. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the University which was founded in 1994 as the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) and retitled as EdUHK in May 2016. The alumni award has been introduced to coincide with EdUHK’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

Dean of FLASS Professor Li Wai-keung stated: “I congratulate the six graduates who received the Outstanding FLASS Alumni Award, organised for the first time. Alumni are invaluable assets to the faculty. Many are eager to give back by mentoring their juniors at FLASS or volunteering their time and expertise to support other faculty initiatives. In particular, their rich work experiences and networks help current students plan and advance in their careers. Our outstanding alumni inspire others in their professional and personal lives, benefiting society as a whole. Now is the right time to introduce this award to honour the significant contributions made by our alumni.”

Mr Thomas Chiu Sze-long, an awardee from the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA), teaches his fellow juniors from the department how to play drums. Through playing various drums and percussion instruments together, participants engage in team-building and musical creation.

Departments within FLASS have arranged various activities to present awards to these distinguished alumni. On 30 August, the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA) invited Mr Thomas Chiu Sze-long, a graduate of the Master of Arts in Music Education programme and now a percussion instrument teacher, to demonstrate a drum circle, a team-building and inspirational activity where participants use different drums and percussion instruments to create music collectively. Dr Koji Matsunobu, acting department head of CCA, presented him with an award certificate after the demonstration.

Ms Rowena Cheung Po-man is another awardee from CCA. She has completed her bachelor’s, master’s, and postgraduate diploma programmes at EdUHK and its predecessor HKIEd, including the Master of Education majoring in Visual Arts Education in 2012 and a Certificate in Primary Education (Chinese) (Art & Craft) in 1999. Ms Cheung received her award certificate from Dr Prudence Lau Leung-kwok, Associate Head and Associate Professor of CCA, at the department’s first assembly on 28 August. Thanking the faculty and CCA for granting her this award, Ms Cheung encouraged first-year students at CCA to treasure every opportunity for learning at EdUHK. She has served as an external member of the Faculty Development Advisory Committee since 1 January 2022, and is currently the Principal of the Hong Kong Taoist Association Wun Tsuen School.

Mr Dicky Lee Tik-kee, an awardee from the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies (SSPS) and Mr Kelvin So Jun-yin, an awardee from the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES), were invited to receive their award certificates and deliver guest lectures to their fellow juniors. Mr Lee received his award from Dr Fox Hu Zhiyong, acting department head of SSPS, alongside Professor Christina Yu Wai-mui. Professor Keith Ho Wing-kei, Head of SES, presented the award to Mr So.

Mr Dicky Lee shares with current SSPS students how education at EdUHK has shaped him into the person he is today and encourages them to seek learning opportunities outside classroom.

To a group of current students in the Department of Sciences and Environmental Studies (SES), Mr Kelvin So stresses the importance of protecting world’s oceans. He shared that his own conservation story began at EdUHK when he joined a diving club organised by SES.

Mr Lee (CPA, ACCA, Chartered Tax Adviser) completed his undergraduate studies at HKIEd in 2008 with a Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Secondary) degree majoring in Business Studies and Executive MBA degree at Columbia University and London Business School in 2023. He is currently a Committee Member of the ACCA Young Members Committee and Vice President of Finance at Elitestek Semiconductor Group. During the talk on 26 August, Mr Lee told current SSPS students that studying at EdUHK was a life-changing experience that shaped who he is today. He encouraged his juniors to look beyond the classroom to gain practical work experience in the outside world.

Mr So graduated from FLASS with a first-class honours in Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Education for Sustainability in 2017. He is now an Oceans Conservation Manager at WWF-Hong Kong. In his talk on 26 September, Mr So discussed how joining a diving club at EdUHK during his undergraduate studies sparked his passion for ocean preservation. He urged his fellow juniors at SES to support marine conservation efforts, as oceans play a crucial role in regulating climate and the provision of food.

Mr Wong Kam-po, a legendary cyclist with numerous international championships for Hong Kong, graduated from the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) programme in 2023 and the Bachelor of Health Education programme in 2020 from the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE). He was invited to attend HPE’s first assembly on 13 September, where acting head Dr Andy Tse Choi-yeung presented him with his award. Mr Wong now runs the Wing’s Bicycle Company and is a cycling instructor.

Dr Herman Leung Yu-hin, who obtained his master’s and doctoral degrees from the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT), is also a recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award. He is now Vice Principal (Primary Division) at Minxin Hong Kong School (Guangzhou Nansha).
